What Is Aqeeqah?

Aqeeqah is a Sunnah practice observed after the birth of a child, symbolising gratitude to Allah SWT for the gift of new life. It involves the sacrifice of livestock, usually goats or sheep, with the meat distributed to family, friends, and those in need.

This noble tradition is deeply rooted in Islamic history. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself performed Aqeeqah for his children, highlighting its importance and spiritual value. While Aqeeqah is ideally carried out on the seventh day after birth, it may also be performed later if circumstances require.

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) commanded us to sacrifice two sheep for a boy’s ‘Aqeeqah and one sheep for a girl.”
