Education is vital to development. It provides people with the means to improve their economic situation and strengthens and uplifts communities. In Somalia, African Relief Fund (ARF) provides adults and children with the opportunity to learn and acquire new skills that will help improve their situation. One of the ways we do this is through our Hafiz-e-Quran sponsorship programme.
At ARF, our Hafiz-e-Quran sponsorship programme allows donors to sponsor the Quranic education of students across Somalia. Launched in 2013, we’ve seen hundreds of students complete their learning and go on to become teachers and instructors in their own or other communities. Currently we have 250 sponsored students, enrolled at existing Hafiz-e-Quran schools in Mogadishu, Afgooye, Banbale, Kalkayo, Garowe, Bosaso, Buao and Hageisa.
Help Children Get Quranic Education
For people affected by displacement, conflict and poverty, the gift of a Quranic education is often transformative. We’ve seen it improve school enrolments, curb youth migration, restore hope, and contribute to a community’s resilience to violence.
For underprivileged Muslims, study of the Qur’an is held in great esteem. And the opportunity to become a Hafiz is invaluable. Many children have the desire to study and memorise the Quran, but often they’re forced to drop out of school to work or beg to support the family income.
When our sponsored children complete their Hifz education, they return to their communities to play an important role: they become educators and leaders. Motivated to give back, they teach what they’ve learned to children in their village. They lead congregational prayers at their village masjids or community centres. They facilitate funeral prayers and weddings.
