It is a spiritual act as Muslims are reminded of the values of faith, obedience, sacrifice, and generosity, and a means of helping those who are struggling with poverty and food insecurity.
Qurbani is the sacred act of sacrificing livestock during Eid al-Adha, carried out in remembrance of the devotion and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). When Allah commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son Prophet Ismail (AS) as a test of faith, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) submitted completely to the will of Allah. Before the sacrifice could take place, Allah replaced Ismail (AS) with a ram, honouring Ibrahim’s sincerity and unwavering faith.
Today, Muslims around the world perform Qurbani as an act of worship and gratitude to Allah. The sacrificed meat is shared with family, friends, and those in need, ensuring that vulnerable communities can also experience the blessings of Eid.
Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].” (Surah Al-Kawthar 108:2)
Qurbani is performed every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.
The sacrifice takes place after the Eid al-Adha prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and can be performed until sunset on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.
These days coincide with the completion of Hajj, when millions of Muslims gather in Makkah to perform the sacred pilgrimage. Muslims around the world honour this blessed period by offering Qurbani and sharing the meat with those in need.
