Although, in many areas, cereal harvests in 2005 were an overall improvement on previous years, severe droughts have left millions on the brink of starvation. The four Horn of Africa countries of Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti are some of the worst affected, where an estimated 11 million people are in need of assistance.

In Somalia, the situation is particularly serious, with about 2 million people requiring humanitarian assistance. Most of the affected people are in the south where the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities are facing acute food and livelihood crises due to severe drought.

African Relief Fund would like to appeal to you about the worst and most disastrous  drought effect in Somalia for over  40 years.  The people are dying  because of thirst and hunger. Livestock-dependent pastoralist  communities that live in the affected areas have hardest hit as cattle,  goats, camels die in
unprecedented numbers from hunger and thirst.

The tiny amount of water available, for which many families have to  walk up to 70km to get, is one-twentieth of the daily supply r ecommended by minimum humanitarian standards, Oxfam said.
About 2 million people are now in need of food assistance, health care and water supply  in these areas which has been  engulfed by drought-related starvation.  The matter has been worsen by the absence of a proper an able  government in Somalia. However, the famine deeply has an effect on many southern regions.  These include: 1) Gedo, (2) Bay, (3) Bakool, (4) Middle Juba, (5) Lower Juba, (6) Lower Shabelle, (7) Middle Shabelle
ARF is one of the only relief organizations working to support these people who are really in need. However  our efforts and resources are very limited and can not do much without your generous donation and support. We are therefore appealing for your support to help the Somali people who are  dying by the thousands
